Cyber as the new domain of warfare

‘’To be up to the challenges and threats ahead of us, we need modern and interoperable European armed forces equipped with the latest cyber defence capabilities’’.

Josep Borrel.
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

What will be the core contribution of the ECYSAP project?

The main objective of the ECYSAP project is to develop and implement of innovative theoretical foundations, methods and research prototypes integrated towards providing a European operational platform for enabling high maturity real-time Cyber Situational Awareness (CSA) for military end-users, capable of cyber response, automated and deployable in the same area of operations (National/European) interconnected between envisaged and identified intelligent nodes.

ECYSAP: Advancing Cyber Awareness and Technological Innovation in NATO interoperability exercise context

Airbus Defence and Space Cyber recently took a significant step forward in enhancing cyber situational awareness and interoperability within the NATO context by participating in the Coalition Warrior Interoperability Exercise (CWIX) 2024. The event took place in the NATO Joint Force Training Centre, from June 3 to June 21, 2024. This annual NATO exercise is designed to test and validate the interoperability of operational capabilities from various member nations and industry partners. This year, the event was a showcase of cutting-edge technology and collaborative effort, with over 480 capabilities being tested across the globe.

A major highlight of this year’s exercise was the participation of the European Cyber Situational Awareness Platform (ECYSAP), a project supported by the European Commission and four Ministries of Defence, including France. The French Ministry of Defence, with the support of Airbus Defence and Space Cyber, presented ECYSAP as part of its contribution to CWIX 2024. The platform, developed by a consortium of European industries led by Indra, includes key players such as Airbus, Cybernetica, Innotec, Leonardo, S2Grupo, and several prestigious Spanish universities including Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, and Universidad Politécnica de Valencia.

ECYSAP, which began development in 2020, has made significant strides in its mission to enhance cyber situational awareness across Europe. The platform aims to provide a comprehensive and integrated view of the cyber environment, enabling better decision-making and response in the face of cyber threats. Having reached the final stages of its development and validation phases, ECYSAP’s participation in CWIX 2024 represents a critical milestone in its journey towards operational maturity.

The CWIX 2024 exercise provided an ideal testing ground for ECYSAP, enabling the Airbus team and its partners to rigorously evaluate the platform's capabilities in a realistic operational environment. The successful execution of the test campaign not only demonstrated ECYSAP's potential but also solidified its reputation as a key innovative asset in the realm of Multi Domain Operations (MDO). This recognition was further underscored by the Innovation Working Group of CWIX, which identified ECYSAP as a standout innovation deserving of special attention.

However, the journey is far from over. As the project enters its final phase, the Airbus team continues to work diligently, analyzing the results from CWIX 2024 to refine ECYSAP and ensure its readiness for operational deployment. The next steps will involve further fine-tuning and validation to meet the high standards required for full-scale implementation in real-world scenarios.

The successful participation in CWIX 2024 is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Airbus Defence and Space Cyber team and its partners. As they continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in cyber situational awareness, the broader defence community eagerly anticipates the full operational deployment of ECYSAP.
